To be quite honest, it is difficult for me to grasp how I feel about the Ferguson case, verdict, and rioting that has been happening since the shooting of Michael Brown in August. I can't say that I have taken a particular stand on the issue, because as most people know, the media has a reputation of either leaving out information (for the purpose of gaining viewers or for legal purposes), and for embellishing in order to appeal to a different crowd.
I, personally cannot point fingers at the one solitary person who is at fault in this situation, because all parties involved including the police officer and Brown were to some extent, at fault. The police officer in my opinion, shot Brown out of defense. Should he have fired 12 times? Probably not. But that is up for debate. There has been reported acts of aggression set forth by Brown toward the police officer which is what caused him to fire in the first place. What happened to Michael Brown is quite obviously, unfortunate and heartbreaking. The people following his cause are very passionate about their cause in defending Brown, but I believe they are taking the wrong approach to doing so. Violence cannot and should not be stopped with violence. I admire the passion that is driving Brown's supporters, but it would be far more effective if it were channeled in a more peaceful and constructive way. Burning innocent people's businesses and flipping over cars does not change the situation in the least bit, it worsens it. Newspaper Article:
I could submit my newspaper article to my local newspaper, The Standard Times by completing an online submission at: http://services.southcoasttoday.com/reader-services/submissions/story-idea/ Magazine Article: I could submit my magazine article to the Bridgewater Magazine: http://vc.bridgew.edu/br_mag/ For this book club, we mostly discussed what themes the book has already covered, although we have found some reoccurring themes, it is clear that these themes are very important. Mike Rose puts emphasis on themes like: what constitutes education, why is education important?, is education really equal?, What will an education do for an individual in the future?, and where are the flaws in education?
These themes will be important to keep in min when we are doing our final presentation. I hope that w can answer these major questions by the time we are finished with the book, which will be by the next meeting. I think what I liked most about this article was the style in which it was written. The titles of each section were alluring and made the information easy to follow, it seemed to create a map of where the piece was going. The vivid detail and simple language made it easy to picture not only the murder, but also the impact Dorothy had on society as a "goddess of the 80s." I will definitely keep these two tactics in mind when I am writing my first feature piece. Magazine and Newspaper articles must be interesting, and they have to be about a subject that people care about. These tactics presented in this piece are essential tools in creating that effect.
